FAM team delivering petition to Ohio State Employment Relations Board
Great news!
With support from a strong majority of Miami faculty, the Faculty Alliance of Miami (FAM) is thrilled to announce that we have filed to form a union with the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). On Friday, June 3rd, we submitted a petition for certification with the Ohio State Employment Relations Board (SERB).
Ohio statute permits Miami’s administration to avoid a drawn-out and costly election by voluntarily recognizing the union. Unionizing offers a historic and unprecedented opportunity for your voices to make a difference at Miami. This is a significant moment for you and your colleagues and for collective bargaining in Ohio. Our union drive builds on a national wave of higher education organizing at R1 institutions, community colleges and everything in between. With your continued support, Miami will join the 10 out of 14 other four-year Ohio public universities that already have collective bargaining agreements.

Together, all of you—many hundreds of signers, scores of faculty volunteers—made this day possible through your enthusiastic support. You heard from FAM faculty a lot in spring. The end of the semester was an urgent strategic deadline, and your colleague organizers are grateful for your patience, smart questions, and prompt action. If the University does not recognize the union, FAM colleagues will reach out to you again to remind you to vote during the two-week election window.

Please keep your questions and feedback coming. Want to get more involved? This summer, participate in building an equitable and democratic FAM as we design a constitution, bylaws, and leadership structure to serve all faculty. Join us!

Together, we will strengthen Miami!
