Miami Faculty, Get Ready to Vote!

Picture
We are thrilled to share that tenure-line and TCPL faculty will soon be able to vote to form a faculty collective bargaining unit at Miami University! This is a historic moment made possible by Miami faculty’s hard organizing work over the last three years. Voting will occur via mail ballot between April 18 and May 2. Please read on for important instructions for how to VOTE YES for your union!

In the coming weeks, FAM organizers in your department will share information about the voting process.

While this particular election won’t include our valuable librarian and VAP colleagues, rest assured that we are helping them organize into their own bargaining units and we are all still working together as one FAM—just with a more complicated structure. We are not leaving anyone behind.

Winning this election by a WIDE MARGIN is very crucial to ensure that we have strong leverage and get a great first contract! Strong leverage can mean greater guaranteed annual salary increases, a stronger voice in decision-making, and more.

  • Anyone employed as of March 9th as tenured/tenure-track or TCPL will receive a mail ballot. The Ohio State Employment Relations Board (SERB) will mail your ballot to the home address Miami has on file. If you recently moved or changed addresses, contact Human Resources or check your address on Banner to ensure that Miami has your most current home address.
  • Votes will be counted on May 17 starting at 10:00 am at the SERB office in Columbus. Roughly 802 faculty will be able to vote. To win, we will need 50% + 1 of those who vote. However, great turnout and a solid margin of victory is key to give our union leverage for the bargaining process to follow. It will also pave the way for future units for librarians and other faculty. So please make plans to vote, and please remind your colleagues too!

Wondering how to help get ready for the election? See a FAM organizer in your department  to sign your vote pledge and fill out your membership card if you haven’t already.  And/or reach out to a FAM organizer to help encourage others to sign. You can also share a testimonial on why you are voting yes!

Show solidarity and your plan to VOTE YES for FAM! Wear red every Monday from now through the election period and send pictures for us to share on social media!
